The Rise of Community Solar Projects

Community solar means shared ownership or subscription to a single PV system, distributing energy to many customers. In Nigeria, the closest analogue is minigrids serving clusters (towns, estates, agribusiness parks).

Why it’s growing

  • Lower per-connection cost vs stand-alone systems.
  • Professional O&M, metering, and tariff transparency.
  • Ability to add productive-use loads (cold rooms, milling, irrigation) that improve project economics.

Delivery models

  • Concession or permit-based minigrids under the Mini-Grid Regulation.
  • C&I rooftops with sub-metered tenants; service-as-a-subscription.
  • Donor/blended-finance pilots with community co-investment.

Success hinges on community engagement, right-sized generation + storage, and clear service levels. See our Projects to explore how we implement this model.
